Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year amid financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
